Art Contest

Submission Deadline: April 1, 2025

Purpose

The purpose of this Student Art Contest is to give students a platform to express their artistic and creative skills as they learn about U.S. and aviation history and the contributions, courage, and sacrifices of the men and women who designed, built, flew, and maintained these iconic aircraft as well as the missions they completed.

 

Subject Matter

All aspects of U.S. Marine Corps aviation, past and present.

Who is Eligible?

All Students in grades 6-8 (middle school) and 9-12 (high school) in the Irvine and Tustin Unified School Districts.

Awards

Awards will be made in two categories:

Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.

​

Cash Prizes in each of the two categories:

​

First Place       $300
Second Place $200
Third Place     $100
​

Requirements

  • One Entry per student.

  • Artwork can be any paper medium or canvas board (colored pencil, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, or oils). Digitally created artwork is not being accepted for this contest.

  • All artwork originals must be in an 11 x14 format.

  • Paint must be dry, and artwork must be fixed to avoid smudging.

  • All entries must be original in concept, design, and execution and not violate U.S. copyright laws.

  • Artist’s name and a title and description of the work must be included in each electronic entry.

  • Entries are to be submitted electronically by parents/guardians or teachers. Winners will be asked to deliver their original artwork to the foundation for scanning. A release form signed by a parent/guardian will be required of winning artists. Release forms will be sent to students once they are named finalists.

How Artwork will be Evaluated

 

A committee representing the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation will complete the initial assessment of the artwork. A committee of professional artists will rank the finalists based on knowledge of the theme, creativity, and originality.

Submission Forms

​

To make submissions as easy as possible, we are accepting entries electronically. The contest submission form is at the bottom of this page. Parents/guardians or teachers should submit the entries, not students.

​

Please keep the original artwork. Finalists will be notified and asked to deliver their artwork to the Foundation’s office. Finalists also will be required to submit a release form signed by their parent/guardian at that time.

​

  1. Complete the student/artist questionnaire about the artwork. These questions should be completed by the student. Answers can should be typed in the fields provided below. The answers should be given to a parent or teacher for submission.

  2. Attached a copy of the artwork with the form below. The file should be 15MB or less. Good luck!
