2020-2021 Essay Contest Winners Announced
Theme: “Who is your hero and why?
Annual contest helps develop student thinking and writing skills while addressing core values of the US Marine Corps and our society.
The Board of Directors and staff of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation, the docent team of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum and the staff of the Character Education Resource Center of the University of San Diego are pleased to announce the winners of the 2020-2021 essay contest.
The Middle School Division winning essays are:
FIRST PLACE: Ella Jo, Grade 8, Carmel Valley Middle School, San Diego. Submitted by Teacher, Angela Halpin.
SECOND PLACE: Nhi Hocannson, Grade 8, WoodlandPark Middle School, San Marcos. Submitted by English Teacher, Laura Whitney
THIRD PLACE: Chloe Mullen, Grade 6, The Nativity School, Rancho Santa Fe. Submitted by Teacher, Jasmin Zures.
The High School Division winning essays are:
FIRST PLACE: Bennett Hochner, Grade 12, Sage Creek High School, Carlsbad. Submitted by Social Studies Teacher, Tom Bloomquist.
SECOND PLACE: Alessandra Alluin, Grade 9, Mission Bay High School, San Diego. Submitted by Head Counselor, Caroline Karoczkai.
THIRD PLACE: Karsen Carroll , Grade 12, Grossmont High School, San Diego. Submitted by Teacher, Nicole Thren.
FOR EXCEPTIONAL MERIT: Sanjay Bharadwaj, Grade 10, Academy for Public Speaking, San Diego. Submitted by Kathleen Petrone.
