On Saturday, July 17, 2021, the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation hosted its annual awards celebration for essay and art contest winners and their families at the Foundation office in San Diego.
Students in grades 6-12 from throughout San Diego and Imperial counties were encouraged to submit entries. The theme for the art contest was “Marines in Flight” and the prompt for the essay contest was “Who is your Hero?” Art contest entries were judged by a panel of professional artists and the the essay contest entries were judged first by a committee of veterans and volunteers from the Foundation and then ranked by teachers at the University of San Diego’s Character Education Development Center under the leadership of Edward DeRoche, Ph.D.
In this special episode of “The Inside Loop”, we interview our third-place winner of the 2021 middle school essay contest: Chloe Mullen, Grade 6, from The Nativity School in Rancho Santa Fe. Chloe wrote about her hero, her grandfather, an Air Force veteran who has lived a life of service and integrity she aspires to emulate.
